The "Cat in the Hat" Visits Camden
by Rebecca Heritage

A rainy day…did not keep away…The Cat in the Hat…for Dr. Seuss’s Birthday!

On March 6th, 2004, storyteller Lamont Dixon presented “The Cat in the Hat” at the Camden Free City Library, bringing creativity and imagination to over 50 children. The performance was held in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

Wearing smiles and party hats, the children excitedly watched as Lamont, fully dressed from head to toe as the Cat in the Hat, brought the story to life. Through singing, rapping, dancing, mimicking, miming, and of course, poetry, Lamont electrified the audience of parents and children. His antics encouraged participation and interaction in his exceptional storytelling performance.

Following the unforgettable experience, each child not only had the opportunity to personally meet “The Cat in the Hat”, but also received free age-appropriate books to take home. The children and their parents were also encouraged to register for library cards, so that they may take out books on a regular basis.

An initiative of the Camden Campaign for Children’s Literacy, the Library Outreach Program brings three entertaining storytellers per month to the Camden Free City Library, free of charge to all families.

This initiative is funded by the
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation,
the Georgia Kurr Foundation and Verizon.
