On
Thursday morning, July 10th, 2003, talented storyteller
Oni Lasana presented “Down on the Farm with Granny
Goose” at the Camden Free City Library. Part of the
Camden Campaign for Children’s
Literacy’s Library Outreach Initiative, “Granny
Goose” performed for 33 children, mostly from Camden’s
childcare centers. This program was specifically designed
for Pre-K to 3rd grade, and the young audience enjoyed every
minute!

“Granny Goose,”
a cousin of “Mother Goose,” told stories in
the form of choral poems that encouraged the children to
participate in the storytelling. During “The Sandman,”
children could be heard from afar rap- singing “I
don’t think I like the sandman” as “Granny
Goose” pointed to the crowd. In addition, each child
had a chance to stand in front of the audience and help
“Granny Goose” with the show by clapping or
singing along. “Granny Goose’s” upbeat
show was enjoyed by all who attended, and every child received
a new book.
On June
26th, 2003, Sneakers & Simply Elementary sent “Mrs.
Chuckleberry” to entertain over 35 children from
various local childcare centers. The pre-schoolers watched
as a seemingly average mother turned into the outrageous,
energetic “Mrs. Chuckleberry!”
The show began with a mother
trying to gain the attention of her daughter who would not
get up and out of bed to go to school. This clever mother
knew that only “Mrs. Chuckleberry” would be
successful, so the transformation began! “Mrs. Chuckleberry”
continuously hid behind a small changing wall in order to
surprise the children with funny glasses, crazy wigs, and
many exciting props, including a ‘motorcycle’
that she used to ride around the town. She sang many songs,
encouraging the children to sing along, and every child
had a chance to participate in the fun. “Mrs. Chuckleberry’s”
energy and goofiness were contagious. Everyone who attended
left with a smile… and a free book, of course!
