More than
45 representatives, from 16 organizations and institutions
involved in allied health sciences, talked with over 400 students
and showed them various aspects of careers in health science
fields. Exhibitors included two research centers, the Coriell
Institute for Medical Research and the Monell Chemical Senses
Center; several colleges and universities, including Rutgers,
Temple, Camden County College, and UMDNJ; health care providers,
such as Cooper Hospital, Virtua Health Systems, Our Lady of
Lourdes, Kennedy Health Systems; and health care agencies,
such as the Camden County Health Department, the Hispanic
Family Center, and Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies.

As
always, the exhibitors brought lots of information
as well as activities for the students.
A
new, and very popular, addition to Coriell’s
exhibit this year were demonstrations by Dr. Gary
Butler of the effects of liquid nitrogen. (Liquid
nitrogen is used to freeze blood cells at Coriell)
Students learned about the uses of liquid nitrogen
in the laboratory and were encouraged to hit marshmallows,
balloons, and rubber balls which were frozen in liquid
nitrogen. As everyone could see, the Coriell table
was a "smashing hit" at this year's exhibit. |

The
students came from 11 schools in Camden, including all 5
middle schools, 3 of the K-8 family schools, one of the
magnet schools (the Brimm Medical Arts High School), one
of the charter schools (LEAP Academy University Charter
High School), and two parochial schools, as well as from
3 schools in South Jersey, the Penns Grove Academy of Chemistry
and Engineering, Woodbury High School, and the Gloucester
County Institute of Technology’s Academy of Allied
Health and Medical Science.
