A packed
seminar room greeted Dr. Janet Golden's informal presentation on
a "Cultural History of Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome". Over
20 participating scholars heard Dr. Golden's fascinating observations
on the changing public perceptions of pregnant women and alcohol
as she rendered a history of fetal alcohol syndome from its rediscovery
in 1973 through the end of the twentieth century.
Dr.
Golden teaches women’s history, history of medicine and American
history and is director of the Graduate Program in history. Her
most recent book, coedited with Rima Apple is Mothers and Motherhood:
Readings in American History. Her book, A Social History
of Wet Nursing: From Breast to Bottle will be coming out in
a paper- back edition in Spring 2001. She is currently writing a
cultural history of fetal alcohol syndrome and has received support
