Dr.
Drew Humphries (Professor, Criminal Justice)
was honored at the annual meeting of the American
Society of Criminology *
in Denver (November 19 - 22, 2003) with
the
Outstanding
Scholar of the Year Award
Division of Women and Crime.
The
annual award honors a senior scholar for significant
contributions to the study of women and crime. Humphries
was cited on the basis of her research, including
her recent book, "Crack Mothers" (Ohio
State University Press). According to the award
committee, the book "epitomizes her dedication
to ameliorating the plight of women, especially those
who suffer from sources of multiple jeopardy, viz.,
racial/ethnic discrimination, poverty, drug abuse
and racist criminal justice sanctioning policies."
In addition, the body of Humphries' work was cited
for its contributions to issues important to women:
drug use/abuse and pregnancy, domestic violence, sexual
assault, and abortion. Her research addresses such
social order issues as the media, ideology/moral panic,
and crime.
