Dr. Thomas M. Donnelly (B.S., Saint Peter's College; PhD,
New York University) is a Research Associate collaborating
with Dan Hart (Rutgers-Camden) and Jim Youniss at The Catholic
University of America on a research project, funded by the
William T. Grant Foundation, on the development of civic
competence in adolescence. The researchers are utilizing
two large data sets, the 1996 and 1999 versions of National
Household Educational Survey (NHES) and the National Longitudinal
Study of Youth (NLSY-79) to explore 1) the nature of civic
competence in adolescence; 2) assess the influences of civics
education, community service, family, and neighborhood on
the development of civic competence, and 3)
identify the combinations of factors supportive of civic
competence development that are relevant for social policy.
