Naomi Marmorstein discussed her research on relationships between conduct disorder and depression in adolescents and their substance use behavior, both in adolescence and in early adulthood. Her preliminary findings indicate that both depression and conduct disorder in adolescence predict nicotine use in early adulthood; this association is mediated by nicotine use in adolescence and also by the (potential) relapse of depression during the transition to early adulthood. Although alcohol use in adolescence was associated with conduct disorder and depression in adolescence, alcohol use in early adulthood does not seem to be strongly associated with earlier disorders of these types. There appear to be gender differences in the relationships between these disorders and illicit drug use over time, and the center associates at the seminar discussed potential reasons for these differences.
